Mental health disorders are more common in people with chronic illness than in the general population. Symptoms of depression and anxiety, for example, affect many patients with chronic illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, cancer and epilepsy. Comorbid mental health disorders can arise coincidentally, but can also be related to direct effects of the chronic underlying disease, illness-related anxiety and stress or the use of certain medications. Comorbid depression can exacerbate the symptoms of the chronic illness, negatively affect health outcomes and reduce quality of life, and increase medical costs.
The past few years has seen important progress in understanding the relationship between chronic illnesses and mental health. This multidisciplinary virtual Nature Conference will bring together prominent experts to discuss the latest developments and emerging concepts in basic and clinical mental health research in the setting of chronic illness.
